Hitting mats for a home golf simulator: what people actually buy

Full-stance mats, strips, insert systems and practice ovals: the fourteen mats that keep coming up in build threads, what the forums argue about, which strips fit a GC3 or a GCQuad, and the costs the spec sheets leave out.

Short version: a strip recessed into turf over foam tiles suits a bay that never moves; a full-stance mat suits a room that has to change back. The cost people forget is the replacement strip, because the strike zone is the only part that wears out.

Who this is for

You have picked the enclosure and the launch monitor, and the mat is the last line on the list with the least money left for it. Or you built the bay a year ago and your lead elbow has started to ache. Either way the room is probably a garage or basement bay around 10 ft wide and 5 ft deep on concrete, and the launch monitor is already chosen, which decides more about the mat than most guides admit.

Why the mat matters more than the screen

The screen takes the ball. The mat takes you. Every swing into a hard surface sends shock up the shaft into the wrists and lead elbow, and the forums repeat one story: cheap mat, a month of enthusiasm, tendonitis. Friendly Golfer's roundup opens with tennis elbow after 30 days on a cheap mat. A Slickdeals thread adds the correction worth remembering: thickness alone is not protection. A thick commercial range mat still wrecked one poster's joints; a bristle mat did not. Golf Simulator Forum's budget thread states the rule: preventing injury outweighs realism, every time. Landing and surround turf are a separate guide.

The sub-shapes

Full-stance

One surface, 4 x 5 to 6 x 10 ft, roll it out and hit. It suits a room that has to change back into a garage. About $400 for a 4 x 4 to $1,400 for a 4 x 10. The trade-off: it wears as one piece.

Strip

A 12 x 28 to 12 x 46.5 in panel dropped into DIY turf over 1 in foam tiles, for a permanent bay with a built-up floor. $75 to $280, stance turf extra. The trade-off is the flush cut: measure every layer, because a strip that sits high changes your posture and one that sits low catches the club (The Garage Golfer and Carl's flooring guide both lead with this).

Insert system

A full-stance mat with a replaceable hitting panel: 1 x 4 or 2 x 4 ft in the Fiberbuilt studio mats, 30 x 12 in in Carl's HotShot, 28 x 12 in in the SIGPRO. One mat, and an $80 to $280 fix when the center wears. $500 to $1,300. The trade-off is weight and seams.

Launch-monitor-friendly

A fit, not a construction: side cameras sit level with the ball, overhead cameras need the panel to cover their zone, radar wants a level run to the screen. Mats sold on this carry a 2 ft spacer panel or a 2 x 4 ft strike panel, $1,300 to $1,500, and are built for a bay that never moves.

Practice-portable

Ovals and small three-zone mats, $30 to $500, for a net or a launch monitor on the lawn. None is a stance surface on its own; the ball sits above your feet.

The products people actually buy

The list below is the reference bag for this category: every mat that kept coming up across the threads, reviews and videos we read (at least five independent sources each, ten or more for the first eleven), grouped by sub-shape, with the list price and the date read, the maker's specs, and one thread worth reading first. Full-stance.

SIGPRO Softy 4 x 7: $999.99 at Shop Indoor Golf on October 19, 2026 (4 x 10, $1,399.99). Two stance halves around a 28 x 12 x 2.5 in foam insert, 21 lb, real tee. The mat people land on after the elbow starts; nobody calls it the most realistic, almost everyone would send a friend to it. Known issues: a wear mark after one GSPro round, the base creeping on concrete, three-week waits on marketplace listings.

Country Club Elite (Real Feel): $479 (4 x 5) to $1,199 (5 x 10) at Rain or Shine Golf on October 19, 2026; the maker's site blocks page fetches, so the retailer carries the specs. One piece, dense fibres, a wooden tee anywhere, lives outdoors. People buy it first because it tees like a range mat for half the money; the forums are full of the second purchase, since nearly every member who moved to Fiberbuilt or TrueStrike left a CCE that hurt. Carl's rates its comfort 2 of 5. Known issue: wrist, elbow and hand pain across threads, especially for steep divot-takers.

TrueStrike Academy: $1,248 at Shop Indoor Golf on October 19, 2026, out of stock with no ship date; £665 direct from the UK maker; the Single $1,098 at Rain or Shine, backordered the same day. Gel under a nylon strike surface, any tee height, 134 lb. The 2019 forum thread calls it soft on wrists; Friendly Golfer found it plasticky, seamed and too small for a GCQuad. Known issues: a 2021 report of a US seller no longer selling individual pieces; tearing at three months with a SkyTrak in the Plugged In Golf comments. US supply is thin.

SwingTurf: Rain or Shine's house mat, $399 (4 x 4), $549 (5 x 5), $749 (4 x 7), $849 (4 x 9) on October 19, 2026, the larger three derived from configurator add-ons, not stated totals. 1 in pile over 5/8 in foam, 1.7 in tall, real tees. Less fluffy than Fiberbuilt, less hard than a CCE. Known issues: the strike zone may wear through in 12 to 18 months of daily hitting; the base shifts on concrete. swingturf.com is a parked domain; the brand lives only on rainorshinegolf.com.

Strip.

SIGPRO Softy Hitting Strip: $249.99 on October 19, 2026. The 4 x 7's insert sold alone, real tee, 4 lb; On The Green's chart calls it the strip it recommends most. Known issues: one marketplace buyer reported sag in the middle; at 2.5 in it is taller than most DIY floors.

GungHo Golf Holy Grail Hitting Strip V2: $179.99 for the 12 x 30 on October 19, 2026; the 12 x 35 and 12 x 46.5 Fiberbuilt-opening sizes cost more. Five foam layers under polycarbonate under putting nylon, 1 3/8 in, made for putting turf over 1 in foam, no real tees. Built by a forum member for forum members; the 2021 thread runs six pages with the maker answering. Known issues: waves, turf separating and low spots for several owners in the 2022 to 2023 thread, replaced under warranty; others report no wear after a year. Velcro it down or the corners peel.

SimTurf EZ Tee Hybrid: $75 to $1,165 across 33 sizes, $85 for the default strip on October 19, 2026; the foam-backed MegaMat is $590. Tee-line turf, real tee, made in USA, and the strip Uneekor ships in its EYE XO SIMKIT. At 1 1/8 in installed it is the lowest real-tee option, which is why a 9 ft 6 in ceiling builder picked it. Known issue: no foam at all per Friendly Golfer, who would not recommend it alone to anyone worried about injury. Sources disagree on construction (Golf Simulator Depot says part foam, 1.75 in), so the height is unverified until you measure.

Tartan Turf Bullseye: no product page exists, so every price is a forum quote and unverified: about $140 for a 12 x 46.5 in strip via a Canadian dealer in 2023, $450 for the 5 x 5 Champion mat in 2023, $850 on Yardstick's 2026 chart. Real tee, divot feel, no pain at 500 shots a day per owners. Known issues: bright green is the universal complaint, and one GC3 owner read about half his shots on it (below). Qualified on six mentions.

Insert system.

Fiberbuilt Grass Series Studio Mat 7 x 4: $1,249 at fiberbuiltgolf.com on October 19, 2026; the Hourglass Pro 5 x 4 kit $849 on sale at In The Hole Golf. Nylon bristles in a 1 x 4 ft panel guaranteed for 300,000 shots, a 2 ft spacer panel for a side unit, 2 in tall, 141 lb. The consensus forum answer for joint relief; the realism complaints are as consistent (no resistance on fat shots, slow putting). Supply note: the maker page says Adjustable Tee production is temporarily discontinued; new orders get one rubber tee and a friction holder. Known issues: GC2 users reported inconsistent reads on the bristles; one GolfWRX owner was quoted $600 for a replacement section (search snippets, unverified).

Carl's HotShot Golf Mat System: $499.95 (4 x 5, standard insert) to $1,259.95 (6 x 10, gel) at Golf Simulators Direct on October 19, 2026, matched by Top Shelf Golf; Carl's own page renders prices in the browser only. A 30 x 12 x 1.75 in insert in three feels: Standard (real tees, about $80), Foam Divot (softest, about $230), Gel Divot (most realistic, about $280). The mat you can tune. Known issues: the rubber base is extra and nearly doubles the cost (Golfer Geeks), and without it the mat slides; the standard insert's tee holes swallow balls and its turf shreds early; one buyer wore a hole through a 4 x 5 in three to four months; reviewers steer injured golfers from gel to foam.

Launch-monitor-friendly.

Fiberbuilt Player Preferred Studio Mat: $1,299 (7 x 4, marked limited time) and $1,499 (8 x 4) at fiberbuiltgolf.com on October 19, 2026; $1,399 for the 8 x 4 at PlayBetter. Short turf over a vibration layer, 1.75 in, 122 lb, a 2 x 4 ft panel from the 8 x 4 up. Players bored of the bristles move here; GCQuad and EYE XO owners follow the panel size. Firm: fat shots bounce and carry about 30 yards (Friendly Golfer), too firm for anyone with elbow history. Known issues: an indent under 5,000 shots for one owner; one to two years per section expected; tee holes off the center line.

Practice-portable.

Fiberbuilt Flight Deck: $99, and the Practice Station $499, at fiberbuiltgolf.com on October 19, 2026, matched at Rain or Shine. The oval sits about 5 cm above foot level on its own (Kaizen Golf), so the station (oval plus a 61 x 40 x 2 in stance base, 69 lb) is the real product. Known issue: Flight Deck stock on Amazon is intermittent.

Rukket Tri-Turf: $134.62 as the Attack bundle at Walmart on October 19, 2026; rukket.com returned a 404 that day. Three zones on a 2 mm base; every simulator reviewer treats it as a net mat. Known issue: it slides under full swings unless weighted or on the XL base.

Champkey Premium Synthetic Turf mat: $29.99 in the 13 x 17 in size on Amazon on October 19, 2026, 4.3 stars from 3,086 ratings; champkey.com returned an empty page. The Amazon default under $40; nobody on the simulator forums picks it for a bay. Known issue: the impact-feedback model ripped in under 100 hits for one forum member.

What the forum argues about

Feel or forgiveness. Fiberbuilt Grass and the Softy win the joint side; Player Preferred, CCE and the HotShot gel win the realism side. The fat shot shows it: the Grass lets it through, the Player Preferred punishes it, the CCE slows it like turf, the Softy may under-punish it, the Bullseye mimics it. The GolfWRX thread on using both the Softy and a Fiberbuilt splits the same way (search snippets, unverified). Decide whether you want feedback or want to keep playing, then buy for that.

The Reddit survey. No reddit.com thread surfaced for any mat query we ran on October 19, 2026. The only Reddit signal is secondhand: Yardstick Golf's March 2026 summary of a survey of just over 300 Reddit buyers, scoring Fiberbuilt top for shock absorption, Bullseye top for feel, CCE below average on both. One self-selected survey, reported by a third party. Read r/Golfsimulator yourself before treating it as a verdict.

Strip or full mat. Golf Simulator Forum's rule: stance mat firm so your feet do not squish, strip compliant so your wrists survive. Sweepers can use one CCE surface; divot takers want a firm stance and a soft strip. A $180 to $280 strip replaces the only part that wears; a $500 to $1,300 mat wears as one piece. The other half of the argument is strip size against the camera, covered below; one member also reports only about 12 x 18 in of true strip on some Player Preferred units.

Mat height. 1 1/8 in (EZ Tee) to 2.5 in (Softy). The 1.75 in group (HotShot, Player Preferred, CCE, SwingTurf) lines up with 1 in foam tiles plus turf; the 2 to 2.5 in group (Fiberbuilt Grass, Softy, TrueStrike) needs about a 2 in subfloor to putt flush and a riser for a side camera. MyGolfSpy flagged the Softy's height for low ceilings.

The turf-color anecdote. One GC3 owner in the 2023 Bullseye thread read about half his shots on the bright-green strip and near-perfect on a solid olive mat, with no fix posted. MyGolfSim's guide adds that busy turf patterns under the ball add noise to camera reads. That is one anecdote and one guide line, not a rule; no source says dark turf is required, and we found nothing on lie boards.

Launch-monitor fit

Side cameras (SkyTrak, GC3, Launch Pro, EYE MINI) must sit level with the ball: a mat wide enough to hold the unit (the Fiberbuilt studio mats' 2 ft spacer panel, SIGPRO's strip extensions) or a riser beside a tall mat. Friendly Golfer could not swing a driver with a GCQuad on a TrueStrike Single.

Overhead units (GCQuad, EYE XO, EYE XO2) need the strip to cover the hitting zone: the GCQuad about 14 x 14 in, the EYE XO about 12 x 16 in. The Softy's 12 x 28 in strip covers a GC3 (about 7 x 10 in) but not a GCQuad; the Player Preferred 8 x 4's 2 x 4 ft panel covers both. Uneekor lists the EYE XO, EYE MINI and QED as not compatible with trouble mats and ships the EZ Tee Hybrid in its EYE XO SIMKIT. Carl's sells black tees so tee color does not interfere with ball reads, and notes that tee-receiver holes can fall outside a monitor's zone.

Radar (Mevo+, R10, Trackman) does not care about mat height but wants a level run from ball to screen. Top Shelf Golf adds the step everyone skips: recalibrate once the mat is down.

If the bay has to fold away

In a fold-flat bay the enclosure goes against the wall and the mat is the one part that never folds; it is what is still on the floor when the car wants in. Weight decides it. A 21 lb SIGPRO 4 x 7 snaps apart and slides aside; a HotShot ships rolled and rolls again; the Fiberbuilt studio mats at 122 to 141 lb and the TrueStrike Academy at 134 lb are furniture. For a net-only setup the 69 lb Practice Station is the portable end. StowGolf's published bay is 10 ft wide and 5 ft deep, 7 ft 6 in to the screen top, freestanding, and folds flat against the wall (list $2,495; the first 25 at $2,295; a $100 refundable reservation holds a numbered slot). Most full mats are 4 ft deep, so a 5 ft deep bay keeps about a foot behind the tee; 5 ft deep mats (CCE and HotShot 5 x 8, SwingTurf 5 x 5) fill it edge to edge.

Disclosure: Brett Martin runs Teed and builds StowGolf.

The costs nobody prints

The subfloor: 1 in foam tiles under stance turf for a strip (Carl's says 1/2 to 1 in), about a 2 in build-up for a 2 to 2.5 in mat to putt flush, and Golf Simulator Depot's 3/8 in underlay even under an EZ Tee on concrete.

The base: the HotShot's is sold separately and nearly doubles the cost (Golfer Geeks); the Holy Grail and EZ Tee need velcro or glue.

The replacement strip, which sets the five-year price: SIGPRO strip $249.99 and Holy Grail $179.99 (October 19, 2026); HotShot inserts about $80 to $280; Fiberbuilt Grass strip about $279 on the comparison charts; a $600 quote for a Player Preferred section (unverified); TrueStrike surface $55 to $99 and gel plus surface about $385, older quotes with parts availability questioned. A fair five-year number is the mat plus two strips.

Tees: CCE, SwingTurf, EZ Tee, Bullseye, Softy and the HotShot standard take a wooden tee; the Holy Grail, HotShot foam and gel, Softy LITE and SIGPRO 3D do not. Real tees fly around indoors, so many owners buy cone tees anyway.

The second mat: the CCE refugees on every thread paid twice. SwingTurf's lifetime warranty extension is $89. TrueStrike was out of stock or backordered at both US retailers on October 19, 2026, and the Fiberbuilt adjustable tee is out of production. And once the mat is down, the launch monitor needs recalibrating, which costs an evening.
